Extension of West-East motor corridor to Tyumen to enable haulage of up to 70 million tons of freight yearly
The volume of freight traffic in Russia with the development of new transport North-South and West-East corridors was gauged at the round table “New meanings behind motorways: export potential through the development of high-speed routes” within the framework of SPIEF-2024.
According to the Chairman of the Board of the Russian Highways State Company Vyacheslav Petushenko, the intensity of freight traffic along the M-12 Vostok highway launched all the way to Kazan only 5 months back has already approached in volumes the M-11 Neva. Meanwhile, over the past 3 years, from 2021 to 2023, the total rise in the number of heavy trucks recorded all across the State Company’s road network accounted for 30%.
“North-South is the most popular direction now. Last year we recorded 33.8 million trips along the M-4 Don. Already in July, once the construction of the Tver Bypass down the M-11 is over, we will ensure high-speed traffic along 2.4 thousand kilometers from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea without a single traffic light. Travel time from St. Petersburg to Moscow will become shorter by 30-60 minutes. By the end of the year, owing to the extension of the M-12 to Yekaterinburg, the travel time from Kazan to Yekaterinburg will be reduced by 50% and from St. Petersburg to Yekaterinburg almost by half. And, for instance, it will take 10 hours less to cover a 2.2 thousand km distance from the border with the Republic of Belarus to Yekaterinburg,” remarked Vyacheslav Petushenko.
Further extension of the M-12 highway to Tyumen with the prospect of developing the Rossiya route to Vladivostok will ensure the transportation of 50 million tons of load yearly, including 15 million tons of international freight transportation. And about 70 million tons of freight will be trucked along the West-East corridor to Tyumen.
